Tips for successfully getting a credit card

Keep a good credit score

Credit scores are used by banks and financial institutions as a basis for assessing potential customers. Having a good credit score not only helps you get approval for loans, it will also help you get a higher loan limit with better interest rates.

How do you maintain a good credit score?

To improve or maintain a good credit score, you should develop financial habits such as:

  1. Pay your balance on time

Late payments, even unintentionally, will still negatively affect your credit score. So always check your credit card statement to know how much is due and when. It's best to always pay the entire balance, but if that's not possible, pay as much of it as you can so that your debt will be cleared as quickly as possible.

If you do not know how to pay your credit card, please refer to the following article How to make your HSBC credit card payment

  2. Don't spend over your limit
Credit card sometimes allow you to spend slightly over your limit so you can complete your purchases. However, there is a fee when you do this and it can reduce your credit score.
  3. Avoid multiple loan/credit card applications in a short span of time
Every time you apply for a loan, a hard enquiry is made into your credit score by the lender. All credit enquiries will be saved on your CIC profiles. Too many hard enquiries, within a short period of time, negatively impact your credit score.
A good credit score makes it easier for your credit card application to be approved faster and increase your credit limit easier later.

Do your own application for your credit card

There are a lot of third party credit card registration services on the market today. We strongly recommend you avoid using these types of businesses as there could be possible risks. Not only will you have to reveal all your personal information, but there is always the chance that you pay for the service and up getting a fake credit card.

By actively doing your own research and filling out the application, you'll find out important information about the card. This will help you know all the perks and services it offers, and it will help you avoid unnecessary fees since you'll be fully aware of the card's interest rate and fee schedule.

Don't apply for too many credit cards

There's no law against owning multiple credit cards. It really depends on how you're going to manage and use them. However, financial experts say you shouldn't have more than 2 cards. Owning too many cards can lead to hassle such as:

Lots of fees

Each credit card has its own fees, such as annual fee, late payment fee, interest and more. So the more cards you own, the more fees you might have to pay.

Easy to lose

Because credit cards have their payment information printed on them, it puts you at a risk of fraudulent activities if they fall into the wrong hands. Using multiple cards increases the risk of losing your card.

Difficult to manage

Managing multiple credit cards at the same time becomes quite complicated when your life is busy. There are cases where you can forget to zero out the balance or miss the payment due date. As a result, you could be face with additional fees and interest rates.

Unable to pay

Likewise, multiple credit cards can make it harder to track your spending on each card. At the end of the month you might discover that your balance is too much and you have no way to pay it off.
