3 types of Mastercard cards

The company partners with a variety of institutions to offer several types of cards. Its card offerings include credit, debit, and prepaid cards.

When Mastercard partners with a financial institution, the institution serves as the issuer. In Vietnam, the bank – for the issuance – determines the terms and benefits that a cardholder can receive on their card.

1. Mastercard debit card

Mastercard debit card is a prepaid card. A debit card is linked to a bank account, and money is deducted directly from your checking account.

2. Mastercard credit card

A credit card is a buy now pay later card service. The bank or financial institution will advance money for the transaction made via the credit card. The cardholder will then repay that amount by instalment; pay the minimum payment; or pay in full before the due date, depending on the regulations of each bank.

In addition, credit cards are one of Mastercard's outstanding card services, thanks to the variety of credit cards offered by credit institutions and banks around the world. To attract different types of consumers, the bank offers numerous features on Mastercard-branded cards.

Some popular credit card features may include no annual fee, issuer-branded or custom organisation-branded rewards points, cash back, and 0% introductory rates.

3. Mastercard prepaid card

A prepaid card is a payment card that's not linked to a bank account, unlike a debit card. To use a prepaid card, you just need to top it up. Similar to other Mastercard cards, a prepaid card can be used to pay for domestic and overseas services.

When credit, debit and prepaid Mastercard cards are issued through partners, the financial institution or the bank is primarily responsible for all of the underwriting and issuance of the card.
